I’ll never pretend to understand The Deep!
The Deep is an underwater location within the depths of the Bermuda Triangle. It is connected to Outer Planes via an Astral Gate.
Summary
Described as a shadowline nexus deep below the Atlantic Ocean, the Deep is an underwater habitat where an Astral Gate resides.[1] As the Deep is deep underwater, the surface world doesn’t interact with it much, making its culture significantly different from the surface.[2]
Viscous is a denizen of the Deep.[1] The Loch Ness Monster also came from the Deep’s Astral Gate.[1]
The Deep is being threatened by a "genocidal force of nature" known as The Adversary, who came through the Deep’s Astral Gate. The denizens of the Deep are terrified of the Adversary, as they are currently getting "massacred" by the monster.[3]
Viscous says the other denizens find legs "unnerving", but he enjoys having them.[4]
Calico has knowledge about the Deep.[5][6]
The OSIC seems to worry about the creatures of the Deep.[7]
The Adversary
The Adversary is a powerful and dangerous being who came through the Deep’s Astral Gate. Currently, the Adversary is massacring the denizens of the Deep, and
Viscous believes that, if he can’t stop the Adversary, it’s only a matter of time before the Adversary starts killing everything on the surface.[8][9]
Viscous has entered the ritual to stop the Adversary, hoping to get rid of it to save the Deep.[1]
Most playable characters are unaware of what’s happening in the Deep, and don’t take the threat of the Adversary seriously.[10]
Billy refuses to believe in the Adversary unless he sees it with his own eyes.[11] It’s implied that the surface often ignores the troubles of the Deep.[12][13]
Viscous asks
Grey Talon if the Baxter Society could help stop the Adversary if he fails to summon the Patrons.[14]
Haze is aware of the Adversary and takes the situation seriously as she knows it’s only a matter of time until the Adversary becomes a problem on the surface.[15] She asks
Viscous to tell her everything about the Adversary so the OSIC can be prepared in case more creatures like it come through the Deep’s Astral Gate.[16]
Trivia
Holliday mistakes the Deep for the American Deep South. She asks
Viscous if he’s from Mobile, Alabama.[17]
Removed Lore
Unused hero Fathom was also a denizen of the deep.[18] Before the Adversary came along, Fathom was the apex predator of the Deep.[18]
Some denizens of the Deep used to worship Fathom, begging him to save their lives from The Adversary.[19] The denizens of the Deep know Fathom’s "true name".[20]
Fathom’s motivation in the ritual was to stop the Adversary to regain his status as the apex predator.[18]
