Deadman Danny, also called Daniel, is a living skeleton employed by Fairfax Industries as a product tester, safety specialist and salesman. He enters the ritual to demonstrate the Chimera Mark 1. His precise wish is unclear: Patron remarks suggest recognition, protection for Fairfax, a promotion or a private desire unrelated to work.

Work and origins

Danny’s origins are covered by a Fairfax nondisclosure agreement. He credits Maximilian Fairfax with making him who he is. His contract appears to involve necromancy and dialogue implies his soul could be exorcised. Although devoted to the company, he is paid and says his existence does not belong to it. He still feels pain despite his skeletal body.

He tests dangerous products by accepting injuries and temporary death. Haze credits his work on safe handling of vorpal grenades with saving lives. He is scheduled to demonstrate fire-elemental hazards to an elementary school and an acid-based lip gloss on Long Island. Chester is probably a coworker.

McGinnis built the Chimera Mark 1 prototype, a jetpack powered by refined soul extract that also serves as sandalwood-scented napalm. It overheats and has been unreliable: during its first week of tests it exploded before takeoff. Ongoing changes leave Danny unsure of every feature. The ritual appears to be its first real trial. Danny hopes to promote mass production for the Ixian War and expects Fairfax subsidiary Eldritch Tactical Solutions eventually to use it.

Danny is extroverted and constantly promotes Fairfax, even while dying. He believes his work saves lives, values science as reliable magic and embraces risk in demonstrations. He sees the Baxter Society as outdated. Other characters sometimes find his speeches and company loyalty irritating.

Appearance

Danny has yellow glowing eyes and a long handlebar mustache. His ragged aviator clothing includes goggles, a yellow jumpsuit and test-dummy insignia. He hovers using the large dieselpunk-style Chimera and carries the cylindrical Chimera Peace Bringer gun, connected to his equipment by tubing.

Relationships

He regards Maximilian Fairfax as a father figure and visionary and strongly defends him. He admires McGinnis, calls her Maggie and trusts her despite testing accidents; her own view of him is not established, though their working relationship appears friendly. She asked him to push the Chimera to its limits. Danny fears killing Pocket would upset Maximilian, opposes Pocket destroying Fairfax Industries and regards Pocket’s suitcase as company property. He advertised vermicide that killed 31 of Rat King’s subjects; Rat King wants revenge, while Danny has offered him Fairfax artillery.

Other interactions

Danny seeks to recruit Dynamo, Paige and Violet for Fairfax and Calico for ETS; Haze refuses an ETS offer after seeing its work in North Ixia. He worries killing Apollo could harm North Ixia business and killing Ivy or Holliday could harm publicity. He respects Victor as a warrior but asks him to stay out of sales; he respects Dynamo as a scientist and the Doorman as a fellow company man. He wants ETS assistance against Abrams, likes Lash’s mustache, admires Celeste and wants Kelvin’s glowing rock for McGinnis. He does not want to sell weapons to Wraith or Yamato. Solomon and Danny dislike each other. Baba dislikes the Chimera, while Paradox and the Curiosity Dealer want to try it; Paradox also wants to steal Danny and the machine. The Dealer praises Danny’s salesmanship, and the Soul Urn praises his voice.
