Violet is a young Chinese artist who moved to New York at twelve and grew to love the city. A junior at Jamie West art school on a full scholarship, she was selected for MoMA’s student exhibition, the Upstart Gallery. She skips class to join the ritual so the world can see her work. She wants an opportunity to earn recognition on its merits, rather than wish directly for fame, and fears dying a failure despite her achievements.
She has not spoken to her family for years. Her parents are disappointed for reasons the source does not establish, though they appear still to care. She has spent several years in therapy, possibly in connection with family difficulties. She is not a US citizen, hopes for a green card and struggles to pay rent. As a child she kept rats, including one named Tianjiu.
Violet is ambitious and hardworking, considers herself talented and feels overlooked, but is also insecure. She enjoys painting most other heroes, particularly
Celeste,
Victor and
Ava, with
Drifter an exception. She has problems with authority, drinks and uses drugs, yet remains wary of breaking the law. She dislikes organized religion and Fairfax Industries, though she would buy necessities from the company. She has attended protests against the Friends of Humanity.
Appearance
She has black eyes and black-to-purple hair in a ponytail, with a red hairpiece. Her clothes include a white jacket with blue cloud patterns and pankou knots, a red skirt, red-and-purple apron, painted boots and a raspberry beret. She wears pen-nib earrings, carries a binder and wields a large paintbrush; purple paint stains her and her clothes.
Relationships
Violet thinks her parents would like
McGinnis. She and
Billy are friends and have attended rallies together; he invites her for a beer after the ritual. Both apologize when they kill one another.
Nurse Harrow treated
Violet’s childhood friend Nicholas Tsai.
Violet compares Harrow to an art professor she both loved and feared; Harrow regards her as talented but undisciplined.
Other interactions
Violet’s binder contains drawings of
Rem and
Dynamo. She recognizes
Lady Geist as Johann Geist’s wife, hopes to rival Johann’s art and regrets losing potential patronage. She admires
Mina’s fashion work and wants to collaborate. She enjoys
Paradox Museums;
Paradox thinks
Violet could become worth stealing from.
Violet’s mention of pet rats offends
Rat King, and she dedicates a portrait of him to Tianjiu. She wants to befriend
Paige, hates
Lash and has drawn
Victor in a life class.
Haze suspects
Violet could be a foreign agent;
Rem wonders about
Haze adopting her.
Violet finds
Silver attractive and sees a market for Lycan
Silver art. She references Nicolas Poussin’s 1649 The Judgement of
Solomon when using
Still Life on
Solomon.
