Crates, or boxes, are breakables that can drop Haunted Souls. Punches, shots, certain abilities and sufficient momentum while walking, dashing or sliding can break ordinary crates. Tough Crates are larger, teal, and have thick metal edges and locks; they require a heavy melee. The heavy-melee damage upgrades on Puddle Punch, Rend and Bashdown do not break them, but Rallying Charge knights can.

The cited crate revision reports delayed respawns when a soul drop remains uncollected beyond the normal timer. The October 30, 2026 patch says it fixed some cases where another box’s or powerup’s uncollected pickup delayed a box; the patch does not establish that every delay is gone. Crate souls appear as “Breakable Pickups” in the post-game Souls by Source graph.

Source Base soul value Gain per minute Drop condition
Crate 23 +1.8 60% chance
Tough Crate 46 +3.6 100% chance; heavy melee required

The October 30, 2026 patch says breakable growth values were reduced by 10%. The table reproduces the cited wiki revision’s displayed values; it is not clear from the source whether every displayed value incorporates that change. Soul scaling begins immediately even though ordinary crates first appear at 3 minutes. The source counts 518 crates on the map. Crates bear the Fairfax Industries logo; Tough Crate locks depict a fist. The Hideout contains working crate reskins, including a clay pot and pumpkins used during Halloween.

Tough Crates were added September 29, 2026; tunnel spawn and respawn rose from 3 to 5 minutes on September 16, and the ordinary initial spawn rose from 2 to 3 minutes on May 22.
